Zhang Ziyi is a Chinese actress born in Beijing in February 1979 to Zhang Yuanxiao, an accountant and economist, and Li Zhousheng, a kindergarten teacher. Zhang is known as one of the four Dan Actresses of China, meaning she is one of the most successful actresses from the region. She started studying dance when she was 8 years old, later joining the Beijing Dance Academy at age 11. When she was 15, she won the national youth dance championship; after this, she started appearing in television commercials in Hong Kong.

 Later, at the age of 17 she entered China’s prestigious Central Academy of Drama. While at the Central Academy of Drama she was offered her first role by director Zhang Yimou in the film The Road Home, which won the Silver Bear prize at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival. She is best known for her performance in Crouching Tiger, Memoirs of a Geisha, Hidden Dragon, and Rush Hour 2. Her very first American role was in Rush Hour 2, where she starred with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. She has received international and Asian-region endorsements and is a spokesperson for “Care for Children,” a Chinese foster home program. For a while she was engaged to Aviv Nevo, a venture capitalist, but they separated in late 2010.

Most people spend their whole lives looking for the right job. There are others who never get an opportunity to do work that fulfils them.
