Inspired by the work of Luo Guanzhong’s “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”, already known in our country thanks to the transposition made by John Woo with Red Cliff (Red Cliff), The Lost Bladesman is bombastic epic, throbbing and feelings.

During the period of the Three Kingdoms, China was in turmoil. To unify the country General Cao Cao, who holded the real power behind the emperor, enlists the great warrior Guan Yun Chang. But he was also the most loyal friend of Liu Bei, Cao Cao’s enemy. To persuade the man to fight for him, Cao Cao then kidnaps Lan, the woman he loved.

Due in part to the genre of Martial Arts, this film by Alan Mak and Felix Chong is configured as a real treatise on war and politics, which reveals an ambiguous position and not condescending towards the communist regime.  It is no coincidence that many of Hong Kong teachers have folded on the kind of action most classic of the Martial Arts bring, pleasing to the mother country regime as celebrating the glorious national past. But as the film history teaches us, where censorship and restrictions apply, creativity is squeezed to the maximum to get around traps and snares, with results, as in this case, surprising and unsettling.
